Thrive Pathway Activity 36

Develop Relationships With Other Cultures

Many Christians find themselves so connected with Christian friends that they no longer have relationships with non-believers. This is not God’s plan. Look for creative ways to connect with people in the community.
You can see in Philippians 2:5-7 that Jesus did not come to this earth as a wealthy, powerful ruler. Jesus left Heaven and came to earth as an infant, born to a carpenter’s family. During His adult ministry, Jesus spent His time with criminals, political traitors, and prostitutes. If you do not have any non-Christian friends, you are probably not being an effective witness for God in this world. You can connect instantly with someone over a common interest. This goal is not necessarily to share the gospel with the people that you meet, but rather to get out of your “bubble” in order to establish relationships with people who do not yet know Jesus.

Scripture:

Philippians 2:5-7 (NIV)
"In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who,   being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness."

Matthew 9:10 (NIV)
"While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples."

Details:

  • Connecting with people in your community through hobbies and other interests is one way to meet people. Make a list of things in which you are interested and look for a way to connect with unchurched people in your community who have the same interests. Joining a gym, a garden club, a softball team, a gun club, a dance team, or a book club can be a great way to meet people.
  • Going on community events like cycling trips, nature hikes, car shows, and seminars can also be a way to meet people with whom you have something in common.
  • Joining tailgate parties, community trash pickup days, cultural festivals, and other community events is something Grow Groups can do.
