Be Baptized
Definitions:
Jesus commands new believers to be baptized as a picture - a testimony - of their new life in Him.
Baptize means “to dip under water.” A pastor dips a believer
completely under water and then immediately raises them out of the
water. Going under the water symbolizes the death and burial of sin.
Coming out of the water symbolizes the resurrection from the dead. This
is a picture of what happens to a believer when they receive Jesus as
their savior. Because Jesus died and rose again to pay for your sin,
when you receive Jesus, you die to sin and are raised to new life in
Christ.
Baptism is for believers, so a person must be old enough to
understand that they are a sinner and that Christ died for their sin.
You do not go to Heaven because you are baptized or by doing other
religious things. You go to Heaven because Jesus lived a perfect life,
died on the cross, and rose from the dead. You must trust Jesus alone,
not your good works, to save you.
Baptism cannot save you, but it is important. It is the first step that God calls you to follow in the life of obedience.
Scripture:
Matthew 28:18-20
“And
Jesus came up and spoke to them saying, “All authority has been given
to me in Heaven and on earth. Go, therefore and make disciples of all
the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and
the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and
lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Romans 6:4
“Therefore
we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as
Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we
too might walk in newness of life.”
